Asa Ambrose

Asa Ambrose is a lyric baritone based in Houston, Texas.

His operatic work spans both classic and contemporary repertoire, with roles including Samuel (cover) in The Pirates of Penzance, Bardolfo in Verdi’s Falstaff, the Rich Young Ruler in Shores’ The Son of Man, and Evan Mack’s Yeltsin! In Texas. He has also performed scenes as Papageno (The Magic Flute), Giuseppe (The Gondoliers), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Candide and Maximilian (Candide), and Jaquino (Fidelio). In musical theatre, his credits include LeFou (Beauty and the Beast), the Announcer (Loserville), and ensemble in The Music Man.

Ambrose has appeared on prominent stages such as The Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), the New World Center (Miami), and Houston’s Wortham Center and Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

Recent highlights include a solo recital of American art song for Vision Possible Charity Concerts (March 2025), chorus work with Houston Grand Opera in Wagner’s Tannhäuser (2025), and a summer as a studio artist with OPERA San Antonio–Classical Music Institute, where he performed throughout the San Antonio area, culminating in concerts at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

In Houston Grand Opera’s 2025–26 season, Ambrose will appear in the opera choruses of Puccini’s Il Trittico, Puts’ Silent Night, and Händel’s Messiah (Mozart arrangement).

He is an alumnus of programs including OPERA San Antonio–Classical Music Institute, Schmidt Vocal Arts, YoungArts Week, YoungArts Miami, and the Washington National Opera Voice Institute. He has worked with artists such as Dottie Randall, Alba Franco-Cancél, Jamie Barton, India Carney, Jason Ferrante, Margo Garrett, Mary Henderson-Stuckey, Stanford Olsen, Richard Stilwell, and Cindy C. Oxberry, and has earned recognition at the TEXOMA NATS Auditions and National YoungArts.

Ambrose earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Texas Christian University, with earlier studies at Baylor University. His principal teachers include Daniel Belcher, Dr. Robert Best, J. David Brock, Dr. Melody Rich, and W. Stephen Smith, with coaching from Tyson Deaton, Mark Metcalf, Andreea Muţ, Nino Sanikidze, and Bethany Self.

Beyond performing, Ambrose is a dedicated voice teacher whose approach is content-forward and student-centered. He focuses on cultivating curiosity, generosity, and compassion in the studio while ensuring that technical growth is always tied to meaningful musical expression. His goal is to equip singers with the tools to become confident, independent artists.

In addition to his work as a performer and teacher, Ambrose is an advocate for arts access. He serves as the newly appointed co-director of the Houston Chapter of Vision Possible Charity Concerts, which organizes benefit performances supporting SEARCH Homeless Services and the House of Tiny Treasures (HTT). With HTT, Vision Possible helps fund and program foundational music education for children in underserved communities.

He lives in Houston’s Upper Kirby neighborhood with his husband, Nathan, and their Shiba Inu puppy, Cinnamon.
