Fengzhen Liu – Mezzo-Soprano
Chinese mezzo-soprano Fengzhen Liu is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at Michigan State University, studying under the guidance of Professor Jane Bunnell. She holds both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Vocal Performance from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, where she trained with Professor Ling Duan. Her artistry bridges the traditions of Chinese vocal music and Western bel canto technique, giving her performances a unique blend of lyricism, color, and dramatic depth.
Liu is the Silver Medalist of the 2024 NTD International Vocal Competition in the United States and a prizewinner of China’s prestigious Golden Bell Award. She has also won First Prize at the Ode to the Red Boat National Singing Competition and the Zheng Qiufeng Vocal Works Competition, along with multiple other awards recognizing her vocal excellence. She has participated in master classes with distinguished artists including Alexandra LoBianco, Norman Reinhardt, Ian Howell, and Jane Bunnell.
Her recent operatic credits include Bradamante in Alcina (Chicago Summer Opera, 2025), Mae in The Grapes of Wrath(Michigan State University, 2025, in rehearsal), Pirate Jenny in The Threepenny Opera (2025), and Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro (2024). In China, she starred as Sister Jiang in the symphonic opera Sister Jiang, appeared as the lead in The Same Youth at the Guangzhou Opera Theater, and was featured in the musical To Youth directed by renowned choreographer Zhang Jigang. She has also been a soloist in gala concerts, Lunar New Year celebrations, and multiple solo recitals, including DMA and graduate-level programs.
Beyond the operatic stage, Liu is committed to artistic versatility and cross-cultural exchange. Her career has taken her from major concert halls in China to collaborative projects in the United States, and she continues to build her repertoire across Baroque, Classical, and contemporary works. With her warm, expressive tone and compelling stage presence, she is dedicated to connecting with audiences worldwide and contributing to the growth of the operatic art form.
