Bold, dynamic, and versatile soprano Hayley Abramowitz (they/them/theirs) is based in Washington, DC. In August, Hayley makes their recital debut with Bel Cantanti Opera, singing excerpts from La traviata, L’elisir d’amore, Don Giovanni, and Carousel, as well as art songs in German and Yiddish. They will return to BCO for their Johann Strauss II 200th Gala in March. In December, they join St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury, MD as the soloist for their Messiah. They also look forward to returning to L’Opèra Comique de Washington, singing the role of Wanda in La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein. Hayley was awarded first place in the Edward M. Murray International Competition of Voice (Opera Ithaca) and second place in the John Alexander National Vocal Competition (Opera Mississippi), and appeared in the live final stages of the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation Competition (Opera Naples). This summer, Hayley joins the Opera Company of Middlebury as a Young Artist, singing Nella in Gianni Schicchi and covering Musetta in La bohème.
Over the 2023-24 season, Hayley made several role and company debuts, including Frasquita (Carmen, Opera Western Reserve), the Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte, Loudoun Lyric Opera), and the Baronne de Gondremarck (La Vie Parisienne, L’Opéra Comique de Washington). They were also named a DMV District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, as well as a Winner of the Gigli International Opera Competition.
As a 2022-23 Jan Miller Studio Artist at Pensacola Opera, Hayley performed the role of Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel, and covered Musetta in La Bohème and Julie Jordan in Carousel. They also appeared in a scenes concert as Manon (Manon), Norina (Don Pasquale), and Sophie (Werther), and were the soprano soloist in the Choral Society of Pensacola’s Messiah.
Hayley spent the 2021-22 season as a chorister with Houston Grand Opera, performing in Carmen, Dialogues of the Carmelites, Die Zauberflöte, and Turandot, also making their house debut as the First Handmaiden in Turandot. In November, they presented a recital in the DC area as part of the Living Arts Concert Series, featuring Mozart’s rarely performed concert aria, “Popoli di Tessaglia”.
Other favorite roles include Romilda (Serse), Nella (Gianni Schicchi), Lucy (The Telephone), and Mme. Herz (Die Schauspieldirektor). A third-place winner in the inaugural Cincinnati SongSLAM, Hayley is also a passionate advocate of new music, having presented numerous premieres in the past decade. Particularly dear is William Kenlon’s Longfellow Mosaic, for soprano and Pierrot ensemble.
A sought-after chorister, Hayley has appeared with some of the country’s foremost ensembles. In addition to the HGO Chorus, they have performed with the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir (the Philadelphia Orchestra’s resident chorus), the Spoleto Festival USA Chorus, and the University of Maryland Concert Choir alongside both the National Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
Hayley holds degrees from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (MM '20, PD '21) and from the University of Maryland School of Music (BM '18), where they studied with Carol Vaness and Delores Ziegler, respectively. They are a student of Jason Ferrante.
