Biography

Katherine M. Carter

KATHERINE M. CARTER (she/her) is a stage director based in New York City.

Equally at home in opera, musicals, and plays, Katherine delivers artistic interpretations that range from historically informed productions to innovative conceptual approaches. This season, Katherine leads a new production of The Merry Widow at Sarasota Opera. She returns to The Rose Theater in Omaha to direct a new production of Disney’s Frozen, and makes her Annapolis Opera debut with a new production of Hansel and Gretel. Katherine also returns to the Manhattan School of Music for the third time with a new production L’elisir d’amore.

Last season, Katherine created new staging of Nabucco for the Canadian Opera Company to open their season, which The Toronto Star heralded as “triumphant.” She returned to Wolf Trap Opera to lead a stirring new production of Dialogues des Carmélites. Katherine also made her house debuts at the Aspen Music Festival and San Francisco Opera, both with stagings of La boheme.

Katherine is equally committed to directing musicals and plays. Most recently, she directed a new production of Carousel for Opera Montana, the world premiere of Far from Canterbury for The Barnstormer’s Theatre, and a new production of The Descendants for The Rose Theater. Past work includes new productions with the Westport Country Playhouse and Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre.

As a strong advocate for resources and channels for new play development, Katherine co-founded The MITTEN Lab, a weeklong residency in northern Michigan for emerging theatre artists. Previously, Katherine founded The Other Mirror Theatre Company to produce socially conscious work through adaptations for the stage. In the realm of new musical development, Katherine has helmed developmental productions of Sonata 1962 and the immersive musical Gods & Kings.

Frequently in demand for her work with young artists and students, she has been a guest at some of opera’s leading training programs including The Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Santa Fe Opera, and Wolf Trap Opera. Katherine has also led productions and workshops at The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes Opera, New York University, Carnegie Mellon University, Rice University, the New School for Drama, Interlochen Academy for the Arts, and the University of Michigan.

She has been awarded fellowships and residencies with New Georges, Wolf Trap Opera, The Drama League, and Playwrights Horizons.

Katherine is a certified Intimacy Director through IDC Professionals. She serves as an Intimacy Director for The Metropolitan Opera.
