Matthew Daily, a native Houstonian, is a professional double bassist and educator. Matthew holds a section position with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Hege. In addition, he has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Houston Ballet, Apollo Chamber Playes, the Lexington Philharmonic, and the Wichita Grand Opera to name a few. Matthew has worked with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Nathalie Stutzman, Christoph Eschenbach, Christian Măcelaru, Robert Spano, Ken-David Masur, Andrew Manze, JoAnn Falletta, Karina Cannellakis, Patrick Summers, Robert Franz, Jerry Hou, among many others. Matthew performs on the 2019 International Bass Society award winning instrument built by Evan Davenport of Albuquerque New Mexico.
When Matthew isn’t performing, he is an avid double bass teacher offering lessons, clinics, and sectionals. In addition to his private studio, he works through Houston Youth Symphony and local school districts at the high school and middle school level.
Matthew has a master’s degree in double bass performance at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University under the tutelage of Paul Ellison and Timothy Pitts. Matthew earned his B.M from Northwestern University Bienen School of Music (‘22) studying with Andrew Raciti of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He has also studied extensively with Houston Symphony member Eric Larson. Additionally, Matthew has performed in masterclasses with Francois Rabbath, David Allen Moore, Robin Kesslman, Tracy Rowell, Christian McBride and Lawrence Hurst among others.
