Mukil Narayanan is an American pianist, composer, arranger, poet, and conductor of South Indian descent known for his contemporary classical style that fuses unexpected chromaticism with modern melodic colors. Mukil started playing the piano at age 6. When Mukil was ten, Mukil began to learn under Jamie Del Priore D.M.A. In August 2020, Mukil was selected among the top 4% of examinees to do a branch honors recital per the guidelines of MTAC's Certificate of Merit musical examination program. Since then, Mukil has won state honors awards, and has played either at annual recitals or convention recitals. Mukil also took part in dual enrollment West Valley College as part of high school where he graduated with top honors, all four intense levels of music theory and history with top grades.Mukil also practices violin-piano duets with a friend, Max Polosky, accompanying and arranging duets.
Mukil began composing and arranging at the age of 14 & is now a music composition major at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. With over 50+ compositions and a very prolific composer, Mukil's compositions have been praised by leading musicians for being a unique feel to the stylistic approaches of music and are introspective, lyrical, and emotional, often tying the music to a specific visual cue or reference that resonates deep within human emotions. His music has been praised by leading composers such as Dr. Byron Adams, Ian Venables, Dr. Martin Hebel, Dr. Sean Friar, Robert J. Sinclair, Dr. Andrew Conklin, and many more.
In 2023, Mukil was one of sixty-five young musicians to be selected for the 2023 Lamont Summer Academy, held at the University of Denver, a two-week competitive and intensive summer music camp. There, Mukil’s composition “Hoffnung” for oboe, violin, cello, and piano was premiered there. It was remarked as very emotional and very nostalgic. Mukil was mentored by composers in high school such as Robert Sinclair of West Valley College and Dr. Sean Friar, chair of composition at the University of Denver due to his talent and proficiency in composing and music theory.
Following the camp, many of Mukil’s friends including accomplished musicians from the Lamont School of Music, West Valley College, and SFCM have commissioned and performed his compositions, for varied instrumentation.As a conductor, he is largely self-taught but has an ability to conduct any piece of classical music that he is immersed in. His conducting style has been hailed as very expressive, and he conducted the world premiere of his ground-breaking commission, Sita's Tale to much wide and far acclaim.
He is currently completing his bachelor's in music composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of the award-winning American composer David Garner.
