The annual Philharmonic Adventure Concert series has been presented to area 3rd and 4th grade students since the 1988-89 season, providing a first time music and concert experience for many of the participants. Children and educators from 32 schools in the south-central region of Indiana participate in the annual Adventure Concert series of programs and events. Philharmonic musicians also visit area schools bringing an interactive musical experience to approximately 1600 students. The Philharmonic's Youth Orchestra performs side-by-side with the CIP at all three concerts, and then go on to perform at several locations in the surrounding community.
Our musicians are featured in stunning double concertos including Bach’s beautiful Concerto for Oboe and Violin, the brilliant Concerto for Flute and Harp by Mozart, and Paul Whear’s moving Elegy for MLK, Jr., for Oboe and English Horn. Barber’s familiar Adagio for Strings rounds out this 75-minute program.
The THSO is thrilled to share our annual music education program with over 3,000 Wabash Valley elementary students on March 25, 2025 at Tilson Auditorium on the campus of Indiana State University. The Adventure Concerts are a special educational concert opportunity for elementary students to explore the orchestra, both in the classroom and in the concert hall. This program includes three concerts performed at Tilson Auditorium annually for thousands of elementary school students, private school students, and homeschool students in the Wabash Valley. Students in VCSC also receive an opportunity to meet our musicians in-person via Adventure Preview school tours with up to six musicians, as well as during Adventure Encore virtual engagement sessions on Zoom, which allow students to ask questions about a professional musician’s career.
Continuing our collaboration with Landmark Columbus Foundation, this program examines the architecture of Japan, including Tokyo and Miyoshi, the sister city of Columbus. The program opens with a dramatic choral piece by Japanese composer Nobuo Uematsu from the famous Final Fantasy VII video game. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is also on the program, which is often performed on New Year’s Eve in Japan.
