(She/Her) Hailed as “powerful” and “ready for primetime,” Nina Evelyn’s mission is to diversify the classical music canon by promoting and performing the works of Black composers. Most recently, she made her leading lady debut with White Snake Projects as Constanza in Jorge Sosa's To the People Like Us. This fall, she debuts as Valencienne in The Merry Widow and Gretel in Hansel and Gretel with Maryland Opera. Evelyn is a two-time St. Louis District Winner of the Laffont Competition.

Biography

Nina Evelyn

Black American soprano Nina Evelyn is recognized for her powerful voice and commitment to diversifying the classical music canon by promoting works by Black composers. Throughout her career, she has featured compositions by Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, H. Leslie Adams, and others with organizations like Opera on Tap Boston, Castle of Our Skins, Voices Unheard, the African American Art Song Alliance, and the International Florence Price Festival.

Nina has performed major concert works such as Margaret Bonds’ Simon Bore the Cross, Florence Price’s Abraham Walks at Midnight, and Adolphus Hailstork’s Crispus Attucks (New England Premiere).

This season, she makes principal debuts as Frasquita in Carmen with Maryland Opera and as Constanza in To the People Like Us with White Snake Projects. Additionally, she makes company debuts with Washington National Opera and Boston Lyric Opera, performing in the ensemble for Verdi’s Macbeth, Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

Nina is a two-time St. Louis District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. Last season, she attended the Aspen Music Festival as a Studio Artist, where she was responsible for Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel and Wellgunde in Wagner’s Das Rheingold. She also originated roles in two world premieres with White Snake Projects.

In 2022, she made a triumphant mainstage debut at Boston Conservatory at Berklee as the title role in Floyd’s Susannah, which was recognized as a standout performance of the year by WBUR Boston.

Her other notable roles include La Contessa in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Monisha in Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and Micaëla in Carmen with Opera North. Nina is a recent graduate of Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where she earned a Master of Music in Opera Performance and a Professional Studies Certificate in Voice Performance.

Outside of her performing endeavors, Nina is a certified Reiki master dedicated to spirituality. With two years of experience in Reiki, she focuses on helping her community find happiness, wellness, and peace. She co-facilitates community healing for artists and musicians with Mary Kray through their Soul Recharge program.
