Biography

Paul Hill

Paul Leland Hill is Detroit-based bass-baritone from hometown Clinton, Utah. Known for his warm voice and comedic timing, he apprenticed at Sarasota Opera in 2020 and returned for the 23 - 25 seasons as a studio artist singing the Imperial commissioner in Madama Butterfly and covering the roles of Silva in Verdi’s Ernani, Wurm in Verdi's Luisa Miller, Raimondo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Basilio in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Jurg in Verdi's Stiffelio. He made his New York City debut with Teatro Nuovo in their production of Verdi's 1847 version of Macbeth, and covered the role of Banco. In 2024 Paul also debuted as Don Basilio with Salt Marsh Opera’s Barber of Seville, and Colline in Opera on the James’s production of La bohéme.

Upcoming engagements include Don Bartolo with University of Michigan's SMTD production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, and Escamillo in their production of La tragedie de Carmen. 

Paul was a company member at Utah Festival Opera for their ’22 and ’23 season stepping in for the role of Mr. Maraczek in She Loves Me and as the Herald in Wagner's Lohengrin. Other recent roles include Pistola in Verdi's Falstaff, Don Magnifico in Rossini’s La cenerentola, and Sarastro in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Paul graduated with a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Michigan in May 2022. While at UM, he appeared as the Sodbuster in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up, Don Pasquale in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, and Pandolphe in Massenet’s Cendrillon. With an undergraduate degree in Piano Performance, Paul continues to play for, coach, and teach young singers in addition to pursuing his operatic singing career.
