Sachie Ueshima, soprano, a native of Japan, recently completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in voice at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In the 2024–25 season, she performed the role of Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Madison Opera. Other recent appearances include Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at Virginia Opera and Kentucky Opera, and Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata with University Opera at UW–Madison. She was also seen as Krystyna Zywulska in Heggie’s Two Remain (Out of Darkness) with University Opera, which was awarded First Place in the National Opera Association Opera Production Competition in 2021–2022.
Her operatic credits include Pamina and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Musetta in La Bohème, Sœur Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites, Drusilla in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Lady with a Hand Mirror in Postcard from Morocco.
Equally active in concert repertoire, she has appeared as a soloist in Mozart’s Requem, Great Mass in C minor, Bach’s B Minor Mass, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Händel’s Messiah, among others. She won the UW–Madison Concerto Competition in 2021, performing Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder with the UW–Madison Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, she received Second Place in the Women in Art Song & Oratorio (Professional Division) of The American Prize. She was also honored to sing as a soloist at the opening mass of the Festival Internazionale di Musica Sacra at St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican in 2015.
A former Studio Artist with Madison Opera in the 2023–24 season, Sachie continues to establish herself as a dynamic performer in both opera and concert repertoire.
