Biography

Sarah Baumgarten

Lyric coloratura soprano Sarah Baumgarten enjoys a multifaceted career spanning opera, musical theatre, and sacred music. Praised for her beautiful, rich tone, she navigates these genres with stylistic sensitivity, vocal clarity, and a collaborative spirit. Whether interpreting Mozart, Puccini, or Sondheim, she embraces the heart of each musical style with authenticity and care.

Favorite operatic roles include Lucy (The Telephone), Musetta (La Bohème), Cinderella (A Tale of Cinderella), Rebecca Kaplan (The Yellow Star), and Annunziata (La Giara). Sarah has been featured with companies such as Annapolis Opera, OperaWorks, Delaware Valley Opera Company, Opera on Tap (Philadelphia and NYC), Asheville Lyric Opera, the International Vocal Arts Institute (Tel Aviv), Vancouver Summer Opera Workshop, Garden State Opera, and Minas. She was most recently seen in the AGMA chorus of Carmen with WolfTrap Opera.

As a concert artist, Sarah has created and performed several original programs: No One is Alone: The Jewish Tradition on Broadway, a lecture-recital exploring the influence of Jewish songwriters on American musical theatre; Jews to My Ears, a program of Jewish songs and works by Jewish composers; and Finding Home, a concert highlighting the cultural intersections between Jewish and African American communities. She has had the privilege of performing at  esteemed venues such as The Kimmel Center, Baltimore’s Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Dixon Place, the Library of Congress, Temple Emanuel (NYC), The Jewish Museum of Maryland, World Café Live, and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic Chorus.

Sarah earned her Certificate in Musical Theatre from Circle in the Square Theatre School, her Master of Music in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University (studying with soprano Ah Young Hong), and her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance with a minor in Italian from Pennsylvania State University (studying with Norman Spivey). She maintains a private voice and piano studio in New York City and can also be seen as a singing tour guide aboard Tea Around Town buses throughout Midtown Manhattan.
