Lyric coloratura soprano Shan Hai, is garnering international attention as a soprano to watch,
praised for her “remarkably accomplished vocalism with bright, accurate coloratura runs and
genuine trills” (Opera News). In 2024 season, Shan made her debut with the New York Festival
of Song under the mentorship of Steven Blier and Bénédicte Jourdois, and a finalist for the
Neue Stimmen competition in Germany. In the 2023 season, after attending the prestigious
Merola Opera Program at the San Francisco Opera, she performed excerpts from Thomas’
Hamlet as Ophélie, Servilia from La clemenza di Tito, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, First Niece in
Britten’s Peter Grimes and covered the role of Lucia in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Chautauqua Opera Conservatory.
Her operatic repertoire includes Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Zerlina in Don Giovanni,
Eurydice in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, Le Feu in L’enfant et les Sortilèges, and
Romilda in Xerxes. Shan won first place in the Ades Vocal Competition, the top prize in the
Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition with the MSM Symphony Orchestra, and prizes from
Opera Index, the Gerda Lissner Lieder/Song Competition, and the Metropolitan Opera Laffont
