Biography

Syrena Torres

Syrena Torres, a Puerto Rican mezzo-soprano born and raised in Hershey, Pennsylvania, strives to increase body positivity, racial inclusivity, and LGBTQ+ representation across the operatic field. She embodies progressive storytelling that pushes imaginative boundaries through high-quality musical performance.

This passion and optimism for the future of the operatic industry was sparked by roles such as Madame de la Haltière in Cendrillon  Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Jo March in Little Women, The Witch in Hansel and Gretel, La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica, Lady with a Hat Box/Foreign Singer in Postcard from Morocco, and Ericlea in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria.

Ms. Torres is currently a 2025 Emerging Artist with the Seagle Festival. During her time there, she will perform Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, Mercédès in Carmen, and Mrs. Buckner in the Festival premiere of Tom Cipullo’s Mayo Buckner ( a life interrupted).

In the summer of 2023, Ms. Torres was a Festival Artist with Opera Saratoga, where she covered the role of Marietta Shingle in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. She returned to Opera Saratoga during 2024 as a Festival Artist for their productions of Katie: the Strongest of the Strong (Katie), Guys and Dolls (Adelaide cover), and the world premiere opera Mad Scramble for Crumbs by composer-in-residence inti figgis-vizueta.

Ms. Torres received an Encouragement Award at the Pittsburgh District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in 2023.

Syrena Torres received her M.M. in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins and her B.M. in Vocal Performance from Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance. She is currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
