Victoria McGrath

Praised for her “clear, fluid soprano” (Classical Voice North America) and performances that convey both emotional depth and vocal control (Schmopera, OperaWire), Victoria McGrath is quickly establishing herself as a promising and versatile soprano. She makes her home in opera, concert and recital, and new works. Recent engagements include the world premiere of Dan Asia’s The Tin Angel with Teatro Grattacielo, her house debut with Sarasota Opera, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Garden State Opera, and a recital of French art songs entitled “The Life of Spring” with L’Opera Comique de Washington.

This season, McGrath made her house debut as an apprentice artist with Sarasota Opera, where she covered Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro under the baton of Louis Lohraseb, in addition to performing excerpts from Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, and operatic rarities by Bellini (La straniera) and Verdi (Aroldo). In June, she originated the role of Maria in the world premiere of Dan Asia's Tin Angel with Teatro Grattacielo. Critics unanimously praised Victoria's clear, fluid voice and performance that was expressive without compromising vocal beauty.

Ms. McGrath’s 2024 season included “The Life of Spring: A Recital of French Art Songs” with L’Opera Comique de Washington, her role debut as Adina in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore with Teatro Grattacielo’s Young Artist Series, a summer concert series with Light Opera of New Jersey, and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Garden State Opera. A lover of art song and an avid recitalist, she has collaborated with Baltimore Musicales, sung programs of Ukrainian songs with Aquilon Music Festival, curated recitals for Easton Art Academy and the Columbus Citizens Foundation, and performed French selections with the French Choir of Washington DC & the Choir of the Embassy of France, under the direction of Simon Charette.

A multifaceted musician and advocate for new music, McGrath is no stranger to world premieres. In addition to Dan Asia’s Tin Angel, Victoria also premiered a new setting of Ave Maria by the critically acclaimed organist and composer Daniel Ficarri. Their original recording subsequently aired on Christ Cathedral’s radio program, “Music from the Tower.” On the operatic stage, she has performed and covered roles in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up, Paul Davies’ Ourland, John Musto’s Later the Same Evening, and Justine F. Chen’s The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turing.

Ms. McGrath is a graduate of the Maryland Opera Studio at The University of Maryland, where she studied with the world-renowned bass-baritone Kevin Short. She completed her undergraduate studies with a full tuition scholarship at Macaulay Honors College at CUNY Queens College's Aaron Copland School of Music. She graduated magna cum laude with a BM in Vocal Performance and a BA in History, with a concentration in Intellectual History. She has studied Italian at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia and German at Freie Universität Berlin, NYU Deutsches Haus, and Musiktheater Bavaria
