This recital will discuss Hungarian influence on German Romantic Lieder and the cultural impact on this music in today’s society. I intend to do in depth musical analyses of Zigeunerlieder by Brahms and Die Drei Zigeunerlieder by Liszt, discuss how exoticism is seen frequently in the Romantic period, particularly, the fascination with Hungarian culture and the nomadic lifestyle, and the cultural shift around the use of the word "gypsy."
Hailey Beard, soprano, is a second year master’s student at Columbus State University, where she studies voice under Joshua May. The Hartselle, Alabama native received her Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Alabama, where she studied voice under Susan Williams. She is a member of CSU’s Schwob Opera Theatre and Schwob Singers. She was most recently seen on the Columbus State University stage as Monica in The Medium. At the University of Alabama, she was seen onstage as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi, Gianetta in The Gondoliers, and the title role of Alcina.
