The Opera Collective presents a double-bill performance of Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Ruggiero Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci. This iconic pairing captures all the gripping drama and “edge-of-your-seat” excitement that defines Verismo (Realism) opera. Though these are two distinct works, they were first performed together as a double bill by the Metropolitan Opera in 1893—a tradition that has become a classic ever since.
Both stories unfold in rural southern Italy at the end of the 19th century: Cavalleria Rusticana is set on Easter morning in a Sicilian village, while I Pagliacci takes place during the Feast of the Assumption in a small Calabrian town.
At the heart of both operas is a passionate and deadly love triangle, as each explores the powerful themes of love, jealousy, and murder.
An adaptation of Franz Schubert’s iconic song cycle, “Die schöne Müllerin,” The Miller's Daughter expands the iconic song cycle into a chamber opera that brings its title character to the forefront of the narrative. Featuring new music by composer Jodi Goble and a libretto by Victoria Erickson, this groundbreaking work brings new life into Schubert's masterpiece in celebration of its 200th anniversary.
Nietzsche follows the cast of characters who shaped the life and legacy of the controversial philosopher—Friedrich (“Fritz”) Nietzsche. His mother wanted him to be a pastor. His musical mentor wanted him to defend antisemitism. His sister wanted power. His love interest wanted freedom. And Fritz wanted to love life—all of it. But how? What do you do when you adore people whose values you abhor? The musical unfolds as a series of flashbacks leading to an explosive conclusion: Fritz goes insane; his sister, Elisabeth, allies with the Nazis; and his love, Lou Salomé, wrestles with fate—how far will you go to set the record straight?
