Biography

Gavin Evanson

Gavin Evanson started his theatre endevours during his Freshman year of high school at Salpointe Catholic High School. After operating the sound board for Disaster the Musical at Salpointe, Gavin was cast in his first play, The Man Who Came to Dinner as Beverly Carlton. It is here that Gavin fell in love with performing and decided to dedicate himself to pursuing theatre as a career.

During his Sophomore year, Gavin continued to partake in his school's productions, started vocal training, and competed in regional theater competitions. Because of his performace as Professor Callahan in Legally Blonde, Gavin was invited to compete in The 2023 Monte Awards, a local theatre competition that picks two winners (Best Actor & Best Actress) to send to New York City to compete in The Jimmy Awards, Gavin was a finalist. After winning 5 superiors at the Southern Arizona Festival of Theatre (SAFT), Gavin took his competition performance to the International Thespian Festival (ITF). At ITF Gavin was awarded two scholarships for his performance of "Now, It's Just the Gas" from Little Shop of Horrors as the Dentist. Gavin was awarded the 2023 Princess Grace Kelly Training Scholarship valued at $1,000 and the Open Jar Institute Outstanding Musical Theatre Scholarship valued at $4,000.

During his Junior year, Gavin began to become very active in Tucson's community theatre landscape, having performed with Arts Express, the Southern Arizona Performing Arts Company, Literacy Connects, Scoundrel & Scamp, and the Inner Voice Studio. He continued to be active in local competition, taking home 6 Superiors from SAFT. During this year he was able to play characters such as Gleb in Anastasia, Bert in Mary Poppins, the Mad Hatter in Alice By Heart, and Cinderella's Prince/The Wolf in Into the Woods, the last of those roles allowing him to once again compete in The Monte Awards where he was once again a finalist.

The summer leading up to his Senior year, Gavin once again attended ITF where he auditioned for colleges, recieving 25 callbacks, was cast as the lead in Reel Times at Somerset High, a chapter-select one-act workshop where the cast brought to life the show for the very first time in a staged reading, was awarded a scholarship from The New York Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts, and won a Thespy Award for his Contrasting Monologues. Later that summer, he was finally able to use the scholarship the Open Jar Institute had awarded him. He spent a week in New York City with the Open Jar Institute training under talented professionals, Broadway stars, and prominent casting directors.

Now, during his Senior Year, Gavin is just as active in Tucson's theatre scene. His dedication to his craft is born endlessly out of passion and love for the arts and he continues to work towards a future career in theatre.
