Opera Grand Rapids began in 1967 as the dream of a handful of opera-loving Grand Rapidians. Today, we are the longest-running professional opera company in Michigan. Located in the heart of West Michigan, Opera Grand Rapids’ productions are produced and presented locally.
Opera Grand Rapids concludes its 2025–26 season with a bold reimagining of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, a poignant tale of survival, betrayal, and cultural collision. This landmark production marks Opera Grand Rapids’ first-ever international co-production, in partnership with Calgary Opera and Arizona Opera. Led by an all-female, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) creative team, the production offers a fresh, culturally informed perspective on this timeless classic.
Set in post-WWII Nagasaki, Japan, the opera follows Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese woman who marries American naval officer B.F. Pinkerton, believing it to be a lasting union. When Pinkerton returns years later with his American wife to claim the son he never knew he had, Cio-Cio-San is forced to confront the devastating truth. With Puccini’s lush, heart-wrenching score, Madama Butterfly remains one of opera’s most emotionally powerful and enduring works.

No other composer in Western music has been so controversial as Richard Wagner. For over a century, his music has either inflamed or enraptured critics and listeners alike. Mark Twain humorously summarized the situation saying, “I have been told that Wagner’s music is better than it sounds.”
Join musicologist Camellia Adams and the talented OperaGR singers and musicians as they dive into the literary and musical world of Richard Wagner. Come see for yourself what the controversy is all about. Will you leave happily singing “Kill da Wabbit” from Chuck Jones’ cartoon What’s Opera Doc? Or will you leave thinking Wagner’s operas are simply hours of “lewd caterwauling”?
