Tradition meets revolution in Opera San Jose’s new production of Fiddler on the Roof. In a vibrant Jewish shtetl on the eve of upheaval, Tevye, the enduring dairyman, grapples with his daughters’ dreams of love while clinging to the customs that provide his world’s structural integrity. In one of America’s most diverse immigrant hubs, this story of heritage, adaptation, and belonging is deeply personal, a reflection of San Jose’s own balancing act between honoring the past and stepping bravely into the future. OSJ favorite Eugene Brancoveanu makes his role debut as Tevye, joined by Nicole Koh as Tzeitel and Melissa Sondhi as Hodel. Celebrated conductor George Manahan returns to the podium alongside director Crystal Manich to reignite this celebration of joy and human resilience on the California Theatre Stage.

The gripping intensity of John Adams’s Doctor Atomic arrives in an all-new production at the California Theatre, led by visionary General Director Shawna Lucey. Chronicling the moral and emotional turmoil surrounding the Manhattan Project, this opera dramatizes the highstakes days when J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team confronted the ethical weight of unleashing unprecedented destructive power. Haunting choruses and pulsating rhythms capture the tension between scientific breakthrough and human conscience. In the heart of Silicon Valley, where ideas become forces that shape the globe, this landmark work lands not only as history, but as a reflection of our own innovation and its enduring consequence. Maestro Joseph Marcheso returns to the podium to conduct this essential inquiry into the soul of the machine.
Johann Strauss's effervescent operetta enters a realm of luck, luxury, and laughter as Cedar Rapids Opera’s mainstage January 2026 production. Die Fledermaus plunges the audience into a world of chance and intrigue, where fortunes—and secrets—are gambled away. Prince Orlofsky’s soirée becomes a grand night filled with masked players, shimmering gowns, and a live orchestra bringing the atmosphere to life.
Love, laughter, and a little liquid courage take center stage in Elixir of Love, Donizetti’s beloved romantic comedy—reimagined for our FREE and open to the public Opera in the Park series.
This hilarious romp follows Nemorino, a hopeless romantic who’s convinced he’ll never win the heart of the witty (and wealthy) Adina. When a smooth-talking traveling “doctor” arrives with a so-called miracle potion—cheap wine in disguise—Nemorino is sure he’s found the answer to finding true love. Add in the hyper-confident soldier Belcore, who also has his sights set on Adina, and what could possibly go wrong?
Performed outdoors, with the gazebos of Orinda Community Park and Civic Park in Walnut Creek as our stage, this production features a cast of Festival Opera Resident Artists and guests in a pared-down, fast-moving version of the opera—perfect for both seasoned opera fans and curious newcomers. So you don’t miss a beat, a narrator will deliver punchy scene synopses, and English translations of the Italian text will be available by QR code on each attendee’s smartphone.
With unforgettable melodies (including the iconic aria “Una furtiva lagrima”), big laughs, and heart-on-his-sleeve romance, Elixir of Love proves that true love doesn’t need magic—just a little courage, good timing, and great music.
Bring a blanket, grab a seat, and fall in love with opera—in the park!
